My Personal Battle and the Quest for a Cure

I have witnessed firsthand the devastating impact of Alzheimer's disease. This condition, which affects millions across the globe, is a form of dementia that wreaks havoc on memory, thinking, and behavior. As time marches on, the disease advances, often leaving individuals incapable of even the simplest tasks. Its effects ripple beyond the diagnosed person, reaching into the lives of family and loved ones who bear witness to the gradual decline.

I, Matt Harrold, know the heart-wrenching reality of Alzheimer's all too well. My mother, Mary Jo, was a victim of this relentless condition, passing away in November 2019. Devoting a significant portion of my time, I am determined to find a cure for Alzheimer's, fueled by the desire to spare others from enduring the same pain my family and I went through.

My mom is the driving force behind my daily fight against Alzheimer's. While a cure can't bring back my confidante, it can prevent countless others from enduring the suffering my mom and family endured.

I've been a part of Team Lost Souls since 2013, playing a pivotal role in establishing LMJ’s Lost Souls- Alzheimer’s Fund, a registered nonprofit 501c3 by the end of 2022. It is an honor for me to carry forward my mom's legacy, symbolized by the "MJ" in LMJ's, as a tribute to her memory. Though circumstances wish otherwise, I embrace this role wholeheartedly. Even my son bears my mom's initials, ensuring her presence is always felt. Although he never had the chance to meet her, my son hears about his grandma every day. The brightness he radiates, lighting up rooms and days, mirrors the way his grandma MJ brought warmth to people's lives. My wife, Alex, is my pillar of strength, supporting me through the tough moments when memories trigger tears. Together, we strive to keep her legacy alive in our lives.

Alzheimer's stands as the leading cause of dementia, accounting for 60-80% of all cases. As a progressive disease, it relentlessly worsens over time. It usually commences with mild memory lapses and confusion, but its progression can culminate in severe cognitive decline, loss of motor function, and eventually, death. Although a cure remains elusive, treatments exist to alleviate symptoms and enhance the lives of those affected.

The battle against Alzheimer's is arduous, yet it is a fight we cannot afford to lose. Individuals like me, along with my family, have taken the helm, dedicating our existence to discovering a cure for this heart-wrenching ailment. Organizations like LMJ’s Lost Souls are also in the forefront, raising awareness, aiding caregivers, and funding research for innovative treatments.

If Alzheimer's has touched you or someone you know, there are ways to contribute. Consider supporting organizations like LMJ’s Lost Souls, which channel funds toward Alzheimer's research, or offer your time to aid those impacted by this condition. Together, we can eradicate Alzheimer's disease, ensuring that forthcoming generations are spared its agonizing grasp.

I'm thrilled to be part of LMJ’s, collaborating with our team and the community to make a dent in the fight against this devastating disease. My story echoes countless others, and I hope those who have undergone this ordeal or are undergoing it now decide to join hands with us to make a difference in ending Alzheimer's
